Caught in the act: Marine officers checking on the fishermen on a trawler detained at Batu Maung in Penang.

GEORGE TOWN: The authorities picked up 13 fishermen in four trawlers for operating in prohibited zones off the south-west coast of the island here.

A joint operation by the Marine police and the Penang Fisheries Department found them carrying out fishing activities between Pulau Kendi and Pulau Rimau.

The fishermen – three Malaysians and 10 Thai nationals – and aged between 20 and 50, were brought back to the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority jetty in Batu Maung.

Also seized were four trawlers worth RM2mil and 700kg of fish worth about RM3,500 during the 1.20am incident on Saturday.Penang Fisheries Department director Noraisyah Abu Bakar said the case would be investigated under Section 8 (b) for abuse of licence under the Fisheries Act 1985.“They were fishing less than 15 nautical miles from the shore, which is prohibited as it would disturb the breeding activities of marine animals,” she said during a press conference at the jetty in Batu Maung yesterday.

Last Monday, Noraisyah said two fishermen were also arrested for using Apollo net trawlers and for operating without a licence.
