JOHOR BARU: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reminded Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) members not to be complacent but to work towards strengthening the party.Even a strong party such as Umno would be rejected by the people if it went off its track, the Bersatu chairman said.

“Those days, Johor used to be an Umno stronghold but after Umno lost its direction, we have now been able to make inroads in the state.

“We can have different opinions but do not do anything that can disrupt the party,” he said during state Bersatu Hari Raya celebrations in Taman Johor Jaya here yesterday.

Dr Mahathir said Umno was once the only Malay party but now, the Malays are split among six different political parties.

He did not name the parties, except to urge those in Umno to join Bersatu.

“Those days I was rooting for the Malays to join Umno but now I am calling on them to join Bersatu,” he said.

He stressed that it was important for the Malays to unite as presently, each of the six political parties was only able to amass 10% of support and needed assistance from others.

Dr Mahathir said there were already moves to open up more Malay-based parties which would increase the numbers up to 10.

This, he said, would result in the Malays being divided and weakened.

He added that Bersatu should learn from Umno whereby loyalty should be given to no one but to the party and its struggles.

Asked whether the call to invite former Umno members to join Bersatu would cause friction within Pakatan Harapan, Dr Mahathir said they were free to look for new members.
