BELURAN: A man was killed while another three were critically injured when the pickup truck they were travelling in veered out of control and crashed along KM75 of Jalan Beluran-Telupid here.
The 50-year-old driver from Sandakan died on the spot after the accident happened at around 7am Sunday (June 30).
District police chief Supt Kasim Muda said the three passengers, all of whom do not have identification documents, were critically injured and sent to Hospital Telupid for treatment.
According to him, the victims were travelling from Telupid to Sandakan when the incident happened.
"Initial investigations at the scene found that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which swerved onto the opposite lane, before crashing on the right side of the road," he added.
Supt Kasim said the driver's blood samples were taken for toxicology test.
"Preliminary investigations showed that the accident was caused by the driver's negligence and does not involve other vehicles," he said.
The case is being probed under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
