GEORGE TOWN: They were raking in profits of over RM200,000 a day from Indonesian gamblers.
Running their online casino from four premises in Bayan Lepas, 16 Indonesians ran their outfit for almost a year before police caught wind of their activities.
In two raids last Friday and Saturday, investigators from the Penang Crime Investigation Department and Northwest District police finally shut them down.
Penang police chief Datuk Comm T. Narenasagaran, at a press conference yesterday, said they nabbed 11 Indonesian men between the ages of 19 and 47 and five Indonesian women aged between 24 and 32.
He said police also seized computers, mobile phones, modems, wireless routers and online banking devices.
“The ring created a website for online gambling and used WeChat and Whatsapp to communicate with clients in Indonesia.”
He said its services included betting on poker, football and lottery.
Separately, Comm Narenasagaran said Penang police also crippled a heroin and ecstasy pill distribution syndicate and seized drugs worth RM718,700.
The syndicate was busted after the anti-narcotics team raided four places in Seberang Jaya, Central Seberang Prai, Simpang Empat and South Seberang Prai.
During the raids, done between 3.55pm and 5pm on Saturday, police arrested a 23-year-old man and seized almost 39kg of heroin, 810 grammes of heroin-based drugs and 4,500 ecstasy pills.
