KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of which party leading the Opposition coalition does not arise because Umno and PAS had established a main and technical committee to formalise their political cooperation, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
The Umno Youth chief, who is a member of the technical committee, said the issue on which party should lead the Opposition coalition was never raised in any meetings before.
“I myself was in this committee and such issues were never raised because we have our strengths and weaknesses,” he said to reporters during a press conference after chairing Umno Youth’s monthly meeting at Putra World Trade Centre on Thursday (June 20).
Earlier on Thursday, PAS mursyidul am (spiritual leader) Hashim Jasin said the Islamist party must be a leader of any political cooperation instead of a follower.
Hashim’s remarks came as PAS convenes its annual 65th Muktamar from June 21 to 23 where cooperation between Umno and the Islamist party is set to be the most anticipated topic to be debated.
According to Asyraf, the strengths and weaknesses of Umno and PAS both complimented each other respectively.
“Umno’s strength might be able to cover PAS’ weakness and vice versa. So, the issue of who leads who never arises,” he added.
He also said that PAS and Umno will decide on a date to officially announce the political cooperation between the two parties.
The technical meeting, chaired by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin and his PAS counterpart Dr Idris Ahmad, comprised five top leaders from both parties respectively.
Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man chaired the main committee.
The setting up of the two committees to formalise the Umno-PAS cooperation was announced by Mohamad on March along with Tuan Ibrahim.
Meanwhile, Asyraf said that Umno Youth has received 2,088 new members from May 6 until mid-June, bringing the total number to 475,244.
“We received many requests by people to join Umno Youth. So maybe the people are more interested to join Umno Youth after we became the Opposition,” he quipped.
