Motorcyclist killed in accident after running red light

GEORGE TOWN: A 65-year-old motorist who ran a red light at a junction died after he was hit by a car.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Che Zaimani Che Awang said the 8.20am incident took place along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway on Tuesday (June 18).

"The car driver was travelling from Weld Quay and heading towards the Penang Bridge.

"The driver then stopped at the intersection of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway and Cecil Ghaut.

"When the traffic light turned green, the driver continued driving but hit a motorcyclist who did not stop at the red light.

"This caused the collision between the two vehicles," he said.

ACP Che Zaimani said that the motorcyclist was brought to Penang Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9am.

He said the cause of death was due to severe head injury from a road traffic collision.

ACP Che Zaimani said that the CCTV footage showed that the motorcyclist did not stop when the traffic light turned red.

The case is classified under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
