Jobless man arrested for alleged attempt to murder cop with sword

SIBU: A 26-year-old jobless man was arrested for allegedly attempting to murder a policeman when an anti-narcotic police team raided his residence.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the raid was carried out at the house the suspect's family was renting on Jalan Huo Ping at 5.45pm, June 17.

The suspect's mother had lodged a report earlier that he had gone amok.

ACP Stanley said the police team arrived at house and an officer introduced himself to the suspect.

He said the suspect ran into his room and the officer gave chase.

"The suspect suddenly came out of the room and swung a sword at the officer, who managed to duck in the nick of time," he added.

Seeing that the suspect was after them, the policemen quickly shut the gate and called for backup.

"The suspect was told to calm down. As he went back to the house, the police team followed and detained him," he said.

The police also seized the sword and a packet believed to contain methamphetamine from the suspect.

ACP Stanley said initial investigation revealed that the suspect was under of influence of drugs at the time of the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder of a civil servant.
