SIBU: The Sarawak state legislative assembly has been told to appoint an Opposition assemblyman to head its Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to serve as check and balance to the state government.
Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming urged the state to follow Parliament, which had already appointed a Member of Parliament from the Opposition to head their PAC.
"I urge the Sarawak legislative assembly to do the same that is to appoint an assemblyman Opposition as the Sarawak PAC like what we did in Parliament," he said at a Father's Day event organised by Sibu DAP on Sunday (June 16) night.
The Teluk Intan MP said there was no reason why the state legislative assembly under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government could not do so if "you have nothing to hide."
He said a clean government allowed the state and country to move forward.
Nga also urged state assemblymen from GPS to declare their assets and income to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC).
He said GPS assemblymen had pledged to declare their asset but only to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
"The Prime Minister, ministers and MPs have for the first time declared their assets and income to the MACC. This is unprecedented. We are still waiting for GPS to do the same," he added.
