PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry has sent a second letter (surat ulangan) to the Finance Ministry about the need for an extra RM3bil allocation to solve the issues faced by its contract workers.
Its minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the allocation is for contracts involving security services, building and area cleanliness, cooked food and other items.
“The ministry is very concerned about the issues involving all these contract workers and is working hard to handle them to ensure their welfare and well-being are maintained,” he said in a statement.
The issue cropped up in January when thousands of cleaning and security workers found themselves jobless after their contracts abruptly ended without prior notice.
Maszlee said that following a Cabinet’s decision on March 29, the Education Ministry had a discussion with the Finance Ministry on April 3 regarding extra allocations for the contract staff.
“In March, the ministry held talks with the Government Contracted Labour Network and S. Arutchelvan of Parti Sosialis Malaysia,” he added.
“All views and suggestions raised during the meeting have been taken seriously.”
