RM500,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes seized at Sabah road checkpoint

KOTA KINABALU: Almost RM500,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes were seized during an inspection at a road checkpoint along the Tawau-Kalabakan road during the early hours of Wednesday (June 12).

Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) commander Datuk Hazani Ghazali said the smuggled goods were seized from two local men, age 20 and 42, during a patrol at the Road Check Points between 3am and 4am.

“Our men inspected two vans that were heading to Tawau from Keningau and discovered 7,620 cartons of cigarettes believed untaxed, worth about RM 464,800,” he said in a statement here Wednesday.

Also seized were the two vans worth about RM140, 000.

Hazani said the seized items were handed over to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for further investigations.

“We suspect these items were smuggled in from a neighbouring country to be sold in Keningau district, some 105km from Kota Kinabalu,” he said.
