PETALING JAYA: When will the targeted petrol subsidy mechanism for the low-income or B40 group be implemented now that we are already the second quarter of 2019, asks MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).
He said Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had previously announced that the proposed fuel subsidy would be implemented by the second quarter of 2019 with a RM2bil allocation.
“The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry also said studies into the fuel subsidy mechanism had entered its final phase, and it would be implemented by April.
"Now they say they have to wait for the Cabinet.
“Processes which are beneficial to the people are so complicated. But the appointment of Latheefa Koya as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner was so easy," he said.
“It’s already June 11, but has anyone seen or read about the latest updates? I tried Googling it but it was futile.
"If you find it, please ‘forward’ the link at the comment section,” said Dr Wee in a Facebook posting on Tuesday (June 11).
Earlier on Tuesday (June 11), Dr Mahathir said that the government was still gathering data on the proposed fuel subsidy.
“No real decision has been made yet,” he told reporters during a press conference after chairing the Economic Action Council (EAC) meeting.
Putrajaya has said previously that the new targeted fuel subsidy mechanism would be ready by July this year. The plan to move from blanket fuel subsidies to targeted subsidies was first announced by Lim in Budget 2019.
