Anwar: Accept PM's decision, give Latheefa space to carry out her duties

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Pakatan Harapan to accept Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's decision to appoint Latheefa Koya as the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief.

Noting that Dr Mahathir's decision had received various reactions from within the coalition as well as NGOs, the PKR president said that continuous polemic would have a "negative impact" on the Pakatan government.

"I am confident that Dr Mahathir and the Pakatan leadership will conscientiously evaluate all views and subsequently explain to the Cabinet and Pakatan presidential council.

"Therefore, I urge all partners to accept Dr Mahathir's decision and give space to Latheefa and the MACC to do their duties in a stern and effective manner," Anwar said in a statement on Monday (June 10).

He also said that MACC must act on all cases of corruption whether it involved the old government or the new, saying that everyone – including Pakatan, NGOs and the rakyat – would be watching the "progress and effectiveness" of the commission.

Anwar's comments came after PKR lawmakers, including Wangsa Maju MP Tan Yee Kew and Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, called for Latheefa's resignation.

Latheefa's appointment, announced on June 4, came as a surprise to many. She replaced Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull, who quit before his tenure was to have ended in 2020.

Dr Mahathir had said it was his personal decision to appoint Latheefa to the post, and that he did not consult the Cabinet on the matter.

However, Dr Mahathir added that he had “listened to many people” before making his decision.
