PETALING JAYA: PKR lawmaker Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (pic) has backed an online petition demanding that Latheefa Koya resign from her post as Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner.
The Setiawangsa MP said that Pakatan Harapan had given its commitment that the appointment of the MACC chief commissioner would be handled by a Parliamentary Select Committee.
"Let us sign this petition so that this commitment can be fulfilled.
"This issue is bigger than Latheefa Koya and this is about the reforms that we have promised the people," said Nik Nazmi, who is also PKR organising secretary, in several of his social media channels.
As of 12pm on Sunday (June 9), the petition calling for her resignation has received over 5,500 signatures.
Another petition calling for her support has got more than 10,700 signatures.
Latheefa's appointment, announced on June 4, came as a surprise to many.
She replaced Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull, who quit before his tenure was to have ended in 2020.
Latheefa then resigned as a PKR member and the executive director of Lawyers for Liberty.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said it was his personal decision to appoint Latheefa to the post, and that he did not consult the Cabinet on the matter.
He also said that he had "listened to many people" before making his decision.
