GERIK: A one-year-old baby girl died while three of her family members were seriously injured after the car she was travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a Perodua Myvi at Kilometre 54 of the East-West Highway on Thursday.
Gerik district police chief Supt Ismail Che Isa said the toddler, Syifaa Thahirah Omar Shaferee, who was seated at the back of the Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), died on the spot during the 10pm incident.
He said her mother Sarkhiyah Manshor, 37, and her siblings Syaza Thoyyibah, 11 and Ammar Syazwan, 9, were all seriously injured and were being treated at the Taiping Hospital.
The father, Omar Shaferee Mamat, 44, was not hurt while the driver of Perodua Myvi, Haslina Mohd Nawi @Yusof, 32, sustained light injuries,” he said yesterday.
Supt Ismail said preliminary investigations showed the incident happened when a car, from the opposite direction and from Jeli to Gerik, lost control and veered into the opposite lane before crashing head-on into Omar’s car.He added it was drizzling at the time of the incident and the case is being investigated under reckless driving. — Bernama.
