IPOH: A one-year-old toddler was killed and three other family members seriously injured when the car they were in was involved in a head-on collision at KM54 of the East-West Highway near Gerik.
Gerik OCPD Superintendent Ismail Che Isa said the toddler, Syifaa Thahirah Omar Shaferee, from Taman Sri Kekati Manir, Kuala Terengganu, died on the spot during the 10pm incident Thursday (June 6).
Supt Ismail said her mother, Sarkhiyah Manshor, 37; siblings Syaza Thoyyibah, 11, and Ammar Syazwan, nine, were all seriously injured and were being treated at the Taiping Hospital.
"The father, Omar Shaferee Mamat, 44, was not hurt," he said in a statement on Friday (June 7).
Supt Ismail said the incident is believed to have occurred when a car from the opposite direction lost control, swerved onto their lane and crashed head on into Omar's car.
"The driver of the other car, Haslina Mohd Nawi@Yusoff, 32, from Kampung Sungai Mas, Machang, Kelantan, sustained light injuries.
"The impact caused both cars to be badly damaged," he said, adding that it was also drizzling during the incident.
"The accident will be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving causing death," he added.
