KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Twenty people lost their lives on the roads during the first day of Aidilfitri on Wednesday (June 5).
Royal Malaysia Police corporate communications head Datuk Asmawati Ahmad said 13,316 accidents involving 18,854 vehicles were reported in eight days until Wednesday since the Op Selamat 15 road safety operation was launched on May 29 in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festive season.
Fatalities numbered 140.
"Yesterday, four fatalities were reported in Kedah, Perak and Johor, three in Selangor, two in Pahang and one each in Negri Sembilan, Kelantan and Sabah,” she said in a statement here Thursday (June 6).
According to the statement, from May 29 till Wednesday, 2,385 road safety operations were carried out with 182,755 summonses issued over various offences.
As for break-ins (of houses and buildings), she said 334 cases were reported throughout the country during the eight days.
Ops Selamat, which ends on June 12, focuses on six major offences namely driving on the emergency lane, overtaking on double lines, using hand phones without the "hands-free” mode, queue jumping, speeding and beating traffic lights. - Bernama
