MADRID: Five lucky Malaysians were among thousands of football
Wong Jin, Ken Cheow, Jasmesh Singh, Tiffany Pang and Jeenii Lam were the lucky winners of the Heineken Malaysia Bhd’s “An Unmissable Weekend” experience to watch the game live on Saturday.
Wong was certainly the happiest of the lot as he saw his team Liverpool emerged champion of European clubs for the sixth time.
“It was a memorable win and I enjoyed celebrating with the team and fellow Liverpool fans from all over the world,” said Wong, 26, from Kepong.
As for Manchester United supporter Jasmesh Singh, he said it was hard to watch bitter rivals Liverpool celebrate their victory at close range.
“Rivalry aside, I must say Liverpool played well this season and deserved to win. Their fans are a boisterous lot.
“They literally conquered Madrid and painted the town red. I just felt out of place,” said the 28-year-old from Taman OUG, Kuala Lumpur.
Cheow from Johor Baru said Liverpool fans continued their celebrations around the Madrid city centre after the game.
“We saw them celebrating with some even dancing on the pavements and open areas.
“It will be a long celebration, for sure,” said Cheow, who does not support any football club in particular but is a big fan of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Pang and Lam, both 34, and also from Johor Baru, said it was an eye opener for them to see Liverpool fans celebrating their victory with so much passion.
“All the Liverpool fans were so happy. Thanks to Heineken for making it possible for me to watch the game and experience the big carnival-like atmosphere here,” said Pang, whose husband is an Arsenal fan.
Lam said she enjoyed meeting football fans, who came from so many places to watch the final.
“There were friendly banter when the rival fans bumped into each other. That was nice to see,” said Lam, adding that there were plenty of cops around the stadium and the city to monitor traffic and
security.
Meanwhile in the country, ardent football fans packed mamak restaurants and pubs to watch the final which Liverpool won 2-0.
