Pakatan leaders go to the ground for Sarawak Gawai, draw crowds

MIRI: Pakatan Harapan national and state leaders are carrying out a series of Gawai visits throughout Sarawak.

They have already visited longhouses in the outskirts of Kuching city and Serian town.

DAP vice-president Gobind Singh Deo and Sarawak DAP leaders, as well as Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian and branch chiefs, visited numerous villages over the weekend.

Last Saturday (June 1) was the start of Gawai, a month-long harvest festival.

"Our presence drew huge crowds of up to 1,000 in each of the villages and longhouses we visit," said Sarawak DAP deputy chairman Chiew Ching Sing who was in the delegation.

He told The Star today that the response and turnout from the native communities was bigger than expected.

"Even those villagers from nearby longhouses came to enjoy the merry-making.

"The visit by Gobind over the weekend is just the start of a series of Pakatan visits to the grassroots for the Gawai and Hari Raya festivities.

"There will be similar big-scale visits to Miri soon," said Chiew, who is Tanjung Batu assemblyman.

More national Pakatan leaders will be coming in the days ahead.
