Driver killed, wife and kids hurt, as trailer overturns

KAMPAR: A trailer driver was killed and his family members seriously injured when the vehicle they were in lost control and slammed into a tree at KM309 southbound of the North-South Expressway near here.

Kampar OCPD Superintendent Hasron Nazri Hashim said Mohd Suffian Mahathir, 28, died on the spot, while his wife and children suffered broken bones during the 5am incident on Friday (May 31).

Supt Hasron Nazri said the family, from Kampung Manggul Paya Sena, Kedah, were believed to be on the way to Johor.

"The driver's death was due to severe head injury.

"His wife Siti Hasfa Suhaila Othman, 26, suffered a broken left shoulder," he said in a statement.

"Their son, Muhamad Kusyairi Mohd Suffian, five, and daughter Intan Nur Syazwina, four, broke their left arms," he added.

Supt Hasron Nazri said police believed Mohd Suffian lost control of the vehicle and it swerved to the left shoulder of the road.

"The trailer, which was was transporting rice, hit a tree and overturned.

"The vehicle has been towed back to the district police station here to be inspected by Puspakom," he said, adding that the victim's family had been informed of the incident.

"The case will be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving causing death," he added.
