Two escape jail time, fined RM400 each for selling handcuffs

KUALA PILAH: Two friends pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court here to selling handcuffs similar to those used by the police.

Wan Amirul Zarni Mohd Kamaruzzaman, 24, and Muhammad Zul Afiq Zafri, 21, were charged with committing the offence in front of a hypermarket here at 6.15pm on May 22.

Both were charged under Section 89(b) of the Police Act 1967, punishable under Section 94 of the same legislation.

Offenders can be jailed up to six months and fined not more than RM500, or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate Nariman Badruddin fined the duo RM400 each in default eight days jail. They had sold 20 handcuffs when they were detained.

Earlier, Mohamad Zahid Ahmad, who appeared for both the accused, had in mitigation asked for a low fine as his clients were not wealthy.

He said both also had siblings to provide for.
