MELAKA: Melaka is set to host the upcoming National Day month-long celebrations and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign under the Pakatan Harapan government.
The programme was held at the Esplanade in George Town, Penang, last year.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would launch the event on Aug 3.
He said the decision to choose Melaka was endorsed by the Cabinet in a recent meeting.
“The selection of Melaka is meant to commemorate the announcement of the country’s independence at Padang Banda Hilir by Tunku Abdul Rahman on Feb 20, 1956,” he told reporters after visiting the state’s Chief Minister Adly Zahari at Seri Negeri Complex in Ayer Keroh yesterday.
Gobind said four locations had been proposed for this year’s event – namely Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh, Dataran Pahlawan, Proclamation of Independence Memorial in Banda Hilir, and Dataran Klebang.
“The final venue will be announced after getting feedback from stakeholders, including the police,” he said.
Themed “Sayangi Malaysiaku – Malaysia Bersih”, Gobind said more than 10,000 people were expected to attend the event.
“A special committee will be set up to ensure smooth running of the event with the first meeting set to be held on June 20,” he said.
On a related matter, Gobind said they would consider extending the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign in the future to inculcate a patriotic spirit among Malaysians.
He said currently, the annual campaign would be held for about one month before the Merdeka Day celebrations on Aug 31.
“We may organise the campaign earlier than August,” he said.
