KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 43,500 cartons of illicit cigarettes worth some RM7.1mil were seized following a raid at a warehouse in Shah Alam, says Comm Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.
The Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) director said five men, aged between 38 and 46, were detained during the operation conducted by the department's Intelligence and Special Investigation unit on Wednesday (May 22).
"We believe the syndicate has been catering to the Klang Valley market.
"We are investigating further to uncover the extent of their illegal trade," he said in a statement.
Besides the contraband, police also confiscated four lorries, three cars and a forklift, he added.
"We have handed over all seized items to the Customs Department for further investigation.
"The case is classified under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
Comm Acryl urged anyone with information on illegal smuggling or other crimes to contact the nearest police station.
