SIBU: The Sarawak state government will be giving a RM10 subsidy to express boat passengers in conjunction with the upcoming Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

The subsidy will be for the extra boat services which have been approved by the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB).

Assistant Minister for Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the subsidy is effective from May 25 to 31 for the Sibu-Song-Kapit sector and from June 3 to 9 for the Kapit-Song-Sibu sector.

He said the move was to lighten the burden of the people who are expected to go back to their hometown in droves for the celebrations.

"The operators of express boats have applied to have extra boats for the celebrations and we feel that the subsidy is a wise move for them as they usually have fewer passengers on the return journey," he said after launching the Riverine Safety campaign on Friday (May 24).
