Fire at independent Chinese school razes canteen, almost destroys administrative block

SIBU: SJKC Kiew Nang, an independent Chinese primary school here, suffered a major blow Tuesday (May 21) when its canteen was razed while its administrative block was 70% destroyed in an afternoon fire.

The Fire and Rescue Department said nothing much could be saved from the fire that happened at 4.15pm Tuesday (May 21).

The department received a distress call at 4.24pm and immediately despatched 18 firemen to the scene. They managed to bring the fire under control at 4.55pm.

Acting Sibu fire chief Wan Kamaruddin Wan Ahmad said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

"The fire started from the canteen before spreading to the administrative block. We managed to arrive in time to prevent the fire from affecting the four classroom blocks," he added.

The school has 390 students.
