TAWAU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) intercepted an attempt to smuggle 3,500 contraband cigarettes packets into Sabah at a beach here Saturday (May 18) night.
Esscom commander Datuk Hazani Ghazali said based on a tip-off, its team conducted an inspection at a location suspected to be used by smugglers at Cowie Bay beach, Jalan Tawau Lama, at around 10.40pm.
Upon arrival, a speedboat was seen unloading several packages wrapped in black plastic bags.
"Upon realising the authorities' presence, the boat took off towards the sea and could not be traced.
"The team discovered 14 packages wrapped in black plastic left behind and further inspection found 350 cartons (3,500 packs) of contraband cigarettes of various brands," he said in a statement Sunday (May 19).
All seized items were brought to the district police headquarters for further action and investigations under the Customs Act 1967.
"Members of the public who are aware of anything suspicious or activities that break the country's laws can make a report to the Esscom operations centre at 089-863 181," he added.
