KUALA LUMPUR: Should Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim succeed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as premier, the PKR president must be a prime minister who takes care of the welfare of all Malaysians, regardless of race, says Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai.
“We need a prime minister for Malaysians.
"We don’t want a prime minister who takes care of certain races only. This is important.”
According to Dr Lau, Gerakan isn’t concerned over who will take over as prime minister should Dr Mahathirc step down next May.
“For Gerakan, we are more concerned whether the upcoming prime minister is the people’s PM or just one who takes care of a certain race.”
Lau said this at a press conference at Gerakan’s headquarters in Menara PGRM on Friday (May 17).
Dr Lau said Gerakan’s ideology is based on the notion that the country’s society consists of a diverse mix of race and religion.
“Therefore, we want a prime minister who is fair and square to all,’ he said.
Prior to GE14, Pakatan Harapan component parties agreed that if the coalition won, Dr Mahathir would be the prime minister for two years before handing over the reins to Anwar.
Last Wednesday (May 15), Anwar said Dr Mahathir would still play a vital role as a statesman after a change of leadership.
Meanwhile, the Gerakan president said the party would organise a ceremony on May 25 to honour and remember veteran leaders who struggled for the party in the past.
On the same day, the party would also launch the “Gerakan Corridor”, which would feature the history of Gerakan’s formation since 1959, he said.
He added that the Gerakan building in Penang would be renamed after the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, who founded the party in 1968.
