Cop, robber injured in Miri shootout

MIRI: A policeman and a robbery suspect were injured in a shootout between armed robbers and Miri police at a house here Thursday (May 16).

The 1pm incident happened at Taman Jelita, on the Jalan Taman Tunku housing estate, some 15km outside Miri city.

Miri police chief Asst Comm Lim Meng Seah confirmed the incident.

"Yes, there was a shootout between the police team and a gang of robbery suspects in the house.

"One of our men was shot, and a suspect as well.

"We have arrested two suspects and are hunting for another one," he said.

ACP Lim said the injured cop and robber have been sent to the Miri Hospital.

The cop was shot in the hand while the suspect was hit in the leg.

ACP Lim said the police stumbled upon the armed robbers who were in the midst of robbing a family in a house.

The police team saw a car in the front of the house and decided to check it out.

When the police team tried to investigate, the armed robbers started shooting from the house and the police team returned fire, he added.

Police have also seized a gun and ammunition at the scene.
