Dr Maszlee: Combat terror with love

GEORGE TOWN: Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik says the arrests of local terrorists recently were shocking in this day and age, when everyone thought that such radicalism is over.

He added that through education that is filled with love and compassion, the spread of extremist ideologies can be countered in the long run.

Dr Maszlee added that the spread of radical ideologies through the Internet was very worrying, as some youths are at great risk of being affected.

"The only way to bring extremists back to the right path is through love and compassion.

"People who are lacking of love and happiness will be more easily influenced by extremism and radicalism.

"They do not love themselves and feel that it's okay to die, as long as their ideologies were spread far and wide," he said in his speech at the Festival Guru Malaysia 2019 appreciation ceremony at Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Bayan Lepas on Wednesday (May 15).

Dr Maszlee added that if people love their country, family and their community, there is a higher chance of them not falling into the extremism trap.

"The terrorist ideology and extremism has to be countered with a humane education; an education that is based on love, happiness and mutual respect," he said.

Dr Maszlee also lauded the event organiser, Yayasan Guru Malaysia Berhad (YGMB), for doing a great job by generating as many as 88 booths to participate in the festival.

The five-day Festival Guru Malaysia 2019, which started on May 12, is organised by YGMB in Penang for the first time and serves as a platform for the public to appreciate the services rendered by teachers.

Also present were Education director-general Datuk Dr Amin Senin and YGMB chairman Aminudin Adam.
