Rural Development Minister Rina Harun says the ministry is in talks with private companies to introduce the cashless system.

KUALA LUMPUR: Villages and rural areas nationwide could be going cashless, including for bill payments, by the end of the year.

Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun said the ministry was currently in talks with various private companies to introduce the cashless system to these areas.

“This is one part of the Smart Village initiative that we hope to launch in July,” she said when launching the Touch ‘N Go "Kashless" Ramadan bazaar in Kampung Baru Saturday (May 11).

Rina added that this would also complement the ministry’s Desa Digital (digital village) Programme to upgrade Internet accessibility in rural areas.

It was reported that the objective of the programme was to enable rural entrepreneurs to market their products online and benefit rural communities and youths directly.

Meanwhile, visitors to the Ramadan bazaar in Kampung Baru can utilise the Touch ‘N Go eWallet to pay for their food by simply scanning the QR code of the merchants.

The service is available at some 400 stalls at the bazaar.

Rina said she hoped the service would be introduced to other bazaars next year.
