PUTRAJAYA: The Fisheries Department has never issued any deep-sea fishing licence, rented or leased it to foreigners, says its director-general Datuk Munir Mohd Nawi.

“The licence issued by the department is only for individuals or local companies,” he said in a statement.

Since 2017, 341 foreign vessels, including 285 Vietnamese trawlers, had been seized for illegal fishing activities.

The others were 44 Indonesian vessels, six Thai and six other trawlers from China, Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines.

The total worth of the seizure was RM682mil, he said.

Munir was commenting on media reports on the illegal fishing activities carried out by Vietnamese trawlers and intrusion of local fishing vessels into the coastal areas. — Bernama
