Sandakan polls: Candidates can reach out to voters by relying on government media, says Gobind

Gobind is giving TM one month to prepare a report on ways to address issues faced by Streamyx customers.

SANDAKAN: All candidates contesting in the Sandakan by-election are allowed to invite government media such as Bernama and RTM to reach out to voters, says Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

“This is a by-election and I feel that it’s important for the society to know the candidates' plans for now.

“I feel that they should be given ample space to do so. My stance (on the matter) remains,” he said to reporters when met after a dialogue session with youths in Bandar Kim Fung here on Monday (May 6).

Gobind said that during the Cameron Highlands by-elections, all candidates were given coverage by the media.

“It was the first time that all candidates were given space to use RTM and Astro Awani. They had given their views and their messages were conveyed to the people.

“I still hold on to the same principle, that if candidates want to hold any press conferences, they are free to invite all media to attend,” he added.

In another matter, Gobind said that the current support given to DAP candidate Vivian Wong is convincing.

However, he said that the Pakatan Harapan machinery must work hard in tackling the Sandakan by-election.

“We must hear the people’s grouses and ensure that we are able to respond or address the problems raised,” he said.

The May 11 polls will see a five-cornered fight between DAP, Parti Bersatu Sabah and three other independent candidates.
