SANDAKAN: The three independent candidates in the Sandakan by-election have agreed to participate in a forum organised by Sabah Bersih 2.0 on Monday (May 6).
The three are Hamzah Abdullah, a former chairman for both Sabah PAS and Sabah Parti Amanah Negara; former political worker Sulaiman Abdul Samat; and businessman Chia Siew Yong.
The electoral watchdog in a statement on Sunday (May 5) said they wanted to provide an avenue for the candidates to speak on their ideas, aspirations and plans should they win the parliamentary seat.
"We have sent out invitations to all candidates. However, only the independents could make it.
"The candidates from DAP and PBS were unable to join as they both said they have a packed schedule," said Sabah Bersih 2.0.
The forum, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held at Hotel Labuk, Bandar Labuk Jaya from 10am to 12pm on Monday (May 6).
The group said it hoped to promote the freedom of speech and democracy in the country by allowing candidates to share their vision and plans in helping the people.
The May 11 Sandakan by-election was called after the sudden death of former MP and Sabah DAP chairman Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt on March 28.
Wong's youngest daughter Vivian, 30, also from the DAP, will be squaring off against Parti Bersatu Sabah's (PBS) Datuk Linda Tsen and the three independent candidates in a five-cornered fight.
