Fined RM4,000 for abusing her dogs

MELAKA: A single mother was fined RM4,000 after she pleaded guilty to abusing two dogs.Sessions Court judge Norma Ismail also ordered Lai Woan Yong to reimburse the authorities the cost of RM721 for treating the two pet dogs that she neglected.

The offence was committed at a house in Taman Merdeka , Hang Tuah Jaya, at about 10.20am on June 28 last year.

Officers from the state Veterinary Services Department found the dogs scrawny and with skin infections; one had a swollen eye.

Lai, 37, was charged under the Animals Act 1953, read together with Animals (Amendment) Act 2013, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a jail term of up to one year or both, upon conviction.

The accused was represented by lawyer Sia Sin Yee while Raja Mazlan Raja Mamat, an officer from the department, prosecuted.
