JOHOR BARU: A 29-year-old jobless man was sentenced to six years’ jail and six strokes of the cane for cheating 10 people over a non-existent water filter service.

Magistrate Noor Aisyah Ahmad made the decision after the accused, Mohamad Zulhulaifah A. Ghani, pleaded guilty to all 10 charges.

Zulhulaifah had duped 10 people to hand over cash of between RM98 and RM466, involving a total loss of RM2,888.

The accused was alleged to have committed the offences in Pasir Gudang between Oct 18 last year and April 23 this year.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Khairunnisak Hassni pressed for a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson to the public.

The accused, who was not represented, however, pleaded for a lighter sentence and for the jail term to run concurrently.

Noor Aisyah sentenced Zulhulaifah to two years’ jail from the date of arrest on April 25 and two strokes of the cane for the first three charges.

For the fourth and fifth charge, the accused was to serve another two years and given two strokes.

The magistrate also handed down two more years and two strokes for the remaining five charges.
