KUCHING (Bernama): The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah went on a walkabout at the India Street Pedestrian Mall here Thursday (April 25).

Accompanying their Majesties on the trip at 4.35pm were Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar and Sarawak Tourism, Culture, Arts, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

They spent more than an hour visiting several shops at the popular pedestrian mall, creating history as the first royal couple to visit India Street.

They also stopped at Jubilee Restaurant - an Indian-Muslim outlet popular for its "nasi briyani kambing" dish - and  sampled its roti canai and drinks.

The royal couple then visited the handicraft stalls and fabric shops, while the colourful murals along the street walls caught their attention.

They also consented to accept a gift of Sarawak woven cloth which symbolises the harmony and diversity of the people of the state from India Street Traders Association chairman Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

Later, they left for tea at the James Brooke Bistro  and  Cafe at the Kuching Waterfront.

Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah are scheduled to attend a dinner at the Hotel Waterfront here at 8.30pm Thursday and later view the “Musical Fountain” at the Kuching Waterfront at 10.05pm. - Bernama
