Two men arrested for having homemade air rifles

TAWAU: Police nabbed two local men and seized two homemade air rifles in Kg.Serudong, here, during a crime patrol in the district on Monday (April 15).

Tawau acting police chief Supt Nor Azizulkifli Mansor said the men, aged 28 and 32, were arrested at a house in the village following a tip-off from the public.

"We found two homemade air rifles kept in the store of the house.

"They claimed the rifles were used to shoot rodents, such as squirrels, but we can't accept this excuse as it is against the law to make and keep such weapons.

"Weapons that use ball bearings and marbles as bullets can endanger not only the surrounding community, but the users themselves," he said.

Supt Nor Azizulkifli said such dangerous weapons required its bearer to have a licence to operate and keep.

He added that the two men had also tested positive for methamphetamine.

The case is being investigated under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 for illegal weapon possession and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
