ISKANDAR PUTERI: Dr Sahruddin Jamal went straight to work after clocking in as Mentri Besar yesterday.
The first-term Bukit Kepong assemblyman arrived at Bangunan Dato Jaafar Muhammad here where the Mentri Besar Office is located at 9am.
Several state executive councillors and state secretary Datuk Azmi Rohani greeted him at the building lobby area.
Shortly later, former mentri besar Datuk Osman Sapian arrived to officially hand over the duty to Dr Sahruddin.
Osman, in his short speech, advised Dr Sahruddin to focus on his duty and not be distracted by outside influence.
“We as politician and government head must not be too distracted with outside polemic as they only wanted to interfere in our work especially now in the electronic age,” he said.
Immediately after the brief ceremony, Dr Sahruddin went straight to Kampung Lepau in Pengerang, some 130km away, to hand over aid and basic needs to those affected by the recent explosion and fire at the Pengerang Integrated Complex.
The incident which occurred last Friday caused damages to many houses and injured two local security guards.
Dr Sahruddin said the state took note of the villagers’ suggestions regarding the incident including relocating them to another area.
On the incident, he said Petronas already made the necessary research before carrying out the project.
“But sometimes accidents do happen and the villagers are the most affected.
“I hope Petronas will conduct more engagements with the villagers to understand their plight,” he said.
