We want to see more of those having engineering, law and accounting qualifications becoming our diplomats, says Saifuddin.

JOHOR BARU: The Foreign Ministry says it wants diplomats in the future to come from a more diverse academic background.

Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said that traditionally diplomats were mostly chosen from those with a background in diplomacy and political science.

“However, we want to see more of those having engineering, law and accounting qualifications becoming our diplomats.

“Diplomatic relationships nowadays have become more technical, and we need to increase the quality of our diplomats,” he told a press conference after attending an international seminar on global issues at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) here on Tuesday (April 16).
