SEREMBAN: The new alignment of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project avoids the Titiwangsa Range for cost savings, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
“The ECRL will enter Negri Sembilan, pass through Jelebu, Simpang Durian, Titi, Chennah not because of me. We have done it professionally,” said the Seremban MP.
“It will avoid the Titiwangsa Range where there would be an 18km tunnel,” he said.
Loke said the review and re-negotiation would save RM21.5bil.
“To give you a perspective of how much RM21.5bil is, Negri Sembilan’s annual budget is about RM400mil per year. With RM21.5bil, it is enough for 50 years,” he said.
“The savings would reduce the national debt,” he said on Friday.
Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd and China Communications Construction Company Ltd signed a supplementary agreement on Friday that would pave the way for the resumption of the ECRL project.
The construction cost of Phases 1 and 2 of the ECRL has now been reduced to RM44bil.
This is a reduction of RM21.5bil from the original cost of RM65.5bil.
