SEREMBAN: The people have decided in Rantau, say PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"Pakatan Harapan respects the decision and congratulates the winner, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

"This decision (Barisan Nasional winning) in the state assembly seat is a decision by the people," said Anwar in a statement immediately after Mohamad was announced the winner.

Pakatan's Dr S Streram came in second in the four-cornered fight in the by-election.

Mohamad, who was the incumbent and deputy president of Umno, won 10,397 votes while Dr Streram managed to get 5,887 votes.

Anwar, who is also the Port Dickson MP, said the loss by Pakatan in the Rantau by-election was a reminder to Pakatan leaders to continue to focus on the people's worries about the increasing cost of living.

In thanking the grassroots machinery which campaigned for Dr Streram in the 13-day campaign, Anwar said he was quite confident that Pakatan would "rise again and gain the support of the people after this."

Anwar was in Rantau most days leading the campaign for Dr Streram.
