Maritime officer killed as car collides with lorry, passengers survive


BELURAN: A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officer was instantly killed when his Perodua Myvi collided with a 10-tonne lorry near Ladang Sabah along Jalan Sandakan-Telupid here.

The officer, whose details were not given by the authorities, was on the wheels with his wife, baby boy and three nephews when the accident happened on Saturday evening (April 13).

Operations chief senior fire officer II, Rosemidian Majid, said he rushed to the scene with seven firemen after the Beluran Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at around 4.08pm.

"The driver sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot.

"The passengers were alive when we reached the scene and were sent to a hospital for treatment," he explained, when contacted.

Rosemidian said the baby, who was about one year old, escaped uninjured as he was believed to have been shielded by his mother.

The operation ended at about 5.23pm.
