GEORGE TOWN (Bernama): Wily Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement personnel who masqueraded as passengers since February resulted in the detentions of six men suspected to be taxi touts at the Penang International Airport (PIA) to date.
Penang RTD director Mohamat Johari Mat Not today said that the six men, aged from 35 to 45 years old, were arrested after they tried to cajole the undercover enforcement personnel to use their "services".
"They offered fares up to 40% cheaper than limousine fares at the airport,'' he told a media conference after viewing the Touts Operation at PIA here Thursday (April 11).
He said the six men were being investigated under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, namely, to coax or urge and if found guilty could be fined not exceeding RM50,000 or jailed not more than five years or both.
‘'Investigations thus far found they were using personal vehicles to conduct their illegal service by waiting for passengers at the PIA arrival hall," he said.
Mohamat Johari said the operation was also aimed at ensuring the safety of the public by ensuring they did not use unlicensed services and to protect the image of the country.
In another development, he said Penang RTD would conduct continuous monitoring at the Sungai Nibong Express Bus Terminal to eradicate the activities of ticket touts that adversely affected the bus operators.
"We will take firm action against the ticket touts because we were informed that there are those among the touts who threaten members of the public who refuse to buy from them,'' he added. - Bernama
