SEREMBAN: With only four days left to campaign for the Rantau by-election, Barisan Nasional's opponents in the April 13 polls are being accused of resorting to personal attacks against Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to gain support.

Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin said Mohamad's detractors have resorted to this as they realised that the Umno deputy president had strong support in Rantau.

"If you have noticed, his detractors are now asking about his assets and if he had ever declared them.

"During our time, all MBs and Cabinet ministers were required to declare their assets and their files are still there.

"Those raising such issues are just using such tactics because they realised that Mohamad is synonymous with Rantau and vice versa, and is unshakable here," he said at a ceramah in Taman Kelab Tunku on Monday (April 8).

Khairy said Mohamad was not a "professional politician" and that he was roped into politics by former premier Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2004.

"Mohamad was doing very well in the corporate world and was among others in charge of Mercedes Benz in South-East Asia.

"If he had not quit his job to enter politics, he would have been in a higher position in the automobile company," Khairy said, adding that Mohamad has made huge sacrifices for the state by coming back to serve.

Khairy said the German automaker had so much faith in a local and gave the job to Mohamad. "Today, the same job has been given to a German."

Khairy said having held top positions in various companies, it made sense for Mohamad to be financially sound.

"There is a huge difference in the salaries of an MB and a corporate figure who helmed a big international company," he said.

Khairy urged the people to give Mohamad another mandate, claiming that the Pakatan government has failed the rakyat.

"Even Bank Negara has revised our growth downwards to 4.3% from 4.9% previously.

"Foreign investors are also not coming to Malaysia as they have no faith in us," he said.

MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker, who was also present, said the Chinese should not be unduly worried of the cooperation between Umno and PAS.

"The DAP is continuously poisoning the minds of the Chinese through social media that the cooperation between PAS and Umno would be detrimental to the community's wellbeing.

"Our message to Pakatan is that they should stop politicising everything," he said.

Ti said the Pakatan government should put its own house in order first as they had failed to fulfil pledges made before the general election.

He also said that the credibility of their leaders is being questioned due to the issue of their academic credentials.

"So voting for Mohamad is extremely important because we need a strong Opposition to keep Pakatan in check," he added.
