KUALA LUMPUR: The Counter Terrorism (E8) Division of the Bukit Aman Special Branch has earned the Star Sterling Service Award 2019 for its efforts in keeping the country safe from terrorist threats.

Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ayob Khan received the award from Star Media Group chairman Datuk Fu Ah Kiow at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, witnessed by acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police Comm Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador.

“The Counter Terrorism Division was a clear winner. I believe the media and the public are aware that this division has done a very good job, especially when terrorism threats are ever present of late,” Fu said in his speech at the award giving ceremony on Monday (April 8).

In congratulating the Counter Terrorism Division, Comm Abdul Hamid said the award was a testimony of its relentless efforts and pursuits in preserving the safety and security of the nation.

“Persevere to excel and be prepared to face the ever-growing challenges and ever changing nature of terrorism and security threats. In our line of duty, failure should never be an option,” he said.

Meanwhile, DCP Ayob expressed his gratitude after the division was recognised for its efforts.

“This is the first time we've received such recognition from the media and I'd like to thank The Star and the Deputy IGP for giving his unending support to the division,” he said.

The winner was selected by a panel of judges, comprising Star Media Group Advisor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai; The Star columnist and former Media Prima chairman Tan Sri Johan Jaaffar, Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, and Sin Chew Daily editorial director Datuk Pook Ah Lek.

The Counter Terrorism Division also received RM10,000 prize money, which will be channelled to its chapter of the Police Family Association (Perkep).

The Star Sterling Service Award is aimed at recognising public service organisations which have played a major role in helping surrounding communities as well as contributed significantly to the public.

It is a Star Media Group initiative supported by its charitable arm, Star Foundation.

The Counter Terrorism Division of the Bukit Aman Special Branch is the second government organisation to receive the award.

In 2017, the award went to the National Heart Institute in recognition for its excellence in clinical and public service.
