MIRI: A family of seven Bruneians were injured - two of them critically - when their van crashed into a two-metre deep drain along the Pan Borneo Highway.

The pre-dawn accident happened at about 2am Saturday (April 6) near Serian town.

The family was travelling in their Brunei-registered van from Brunei through Miri to Serian when the accident happened along the Sri Aman-Serian Pan Borneo Highway section.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department in its latest updates said the victims were rescued from inside the drain by members of the public.

"Initial probe showed that the van had crashed into the road shoulder, overturned and then crashed into a roadside drain two metres deep.

"The seven people inside were injured with two of them in critical condition.

"Passers-by rescued them from the van and alerted us.

"The Bomba ambulance rushed them to Serian Hospital," said Sarawak Bomba.

The impact of the crash resulted in damage to the front and side of the van.
