SEREMBAN: Malays will survive if they support good governance that practises transparency, and if they reject corruption and injustice, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The “prime minister-in-waiting” said concerned Pakatan Harapan supporters had asked him how to guarantee the “survival and continuity” of the Malay community.
“Our survival would come from supporting the administration of good governance that is transparent and fights corruption as well as injustice.
“That is how the fate of the Malays will be defended.
“The fate of the Chinese, Indians and Kadazans will also be secured by supporting leaders who are responsible and who hate corruption,” said Anwar in his special address in conjunction with PKR's 20th anniversary celebration at Dataran Rantau on Thursday (April 4) night.
In rallying support for Pakatan candidate Dr S. Streram in the Rantau by-election, Anwar said that the anaesthesiologist would not be a representative of only the Indians if he won, but of all races.
The PKR president said his party did consider fielding a Malay candidate to compete against three-term Rantau assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan from Barisan Nasional, to ensure a win in the constituency for the first time in 60 years.
“But after a long discussion, we said that this is not possible. As a party we must hold on to our promise.
“In Port Dickson, I asked the Indians to support me. We can’t betray the trust given to us and that's why we stayed with our decision to field Dr Streram,” he said.
Anwar said that PKR, a multiracial party, firmly held on to the narrative of upholding justice as this was also what Islam teaches its followers.
“Islam does not provide solutions based on race or skin colour but on justice,” he said.
