SEREMBAN: The Election Commission (EC) has been asked to introduce guidelines for by-elections, says MCA Civil Society Movement bureau chief Ng Kian Nam.“The laws and regulations now are for the general election. A by-election is different from a general election. There are many grey areas involved.

“Such guidelines, if they can be made, will ensure that those in the ruling party do not misuse their power and government assets for by-elections,” he said here yesterday.

Ng added that when a general election is called, the ruling government will be dissolved and there will be a caretaker government.

He said in the Semenyih and Cameron Highlands by-elections, there were many incidents where ministers or others in power were accused of misusing their power.

“With clear guidelines, everyone will know their boundaries,” he said.

Ng said the EC should investigate allegations that voters in Rantau took part in lucky draws and free food coupons were given out to pupils in five schools in the constituency.

Meanwhile, Negri Sembilan MCA chief Siow Koi Voon urged voters to support Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to ensure a check-and-balance mechanism in the Pakatan Harapan state government.
