GEORGE TOWN: Police have crippled a drug processing syndicate with the seizure of drugs and "fake" herbal tea worth RM920,000.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk T. Narenasagaran said the state anti-narcotics team conducted two raids in Seberang Prai on March 28 at around 1.20pm.
Two men - a 60-year-old local and a 40-year-old Myanmar national - were arrested.
"Items seized were heroin, caffeine powder, mitragynine powder, chemicals, fake herbal tea and drug-processing paraphernalia.
"The heroin seized can be used by 15,450 drug addicts.
"The syndicate was operating a drug processing lab. We have sent the tea sachets, which were in 42 small and big boxes, for analysis to determine if there were drugs inside," he said during a press conference at the Penang police contingent headquarters here on Tuesday (April 2).
Comm Narenasagaran said the drugs seized were worth RM167,000, while the herbal tea was worth RM753,000.
He said police also seized three vehicles worth RM167,500, RM34,000 in cash, and cash at the bank totalling RM442,227.55.
Both men have been remanded until Wednesday (April 3) under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for drug trafficking, and Section 272 of the Penal Code for adulteration of food or drinks intended for sale.
Comm Narenasagaran added that the anti-narcotics unit will be staking out drug processing syndicates through local and international enforcement agencies.
