Rantau needs a 'doctor' too, says Wan Azizah

SEREMBAN: Two medical doctors at the federal level are "treating" Malaysia, and Rantau should have its own doctor too, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

"There are two doctors at the federal level, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and me, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, treating the country from the previous kleptocracy administration under the ruling of Barisan Nasional for 61 years.

"Rantau should also have its doctor," the Deputy Prime Minister said at a ceramah near Kampung Sri Lalang here on Sunday (March 31).

The Rantau polling day on April 13 will see Pakatan Harapan candidate Dr S. Streram facing off Barisan candidate Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and independent candidates, Mohd Nor Yassin and Malar Rajaram.

"We are the underdog. We know it is an uphill task as this is a stronghold for Barisan. We are also contesting against someone previously in power, the former Mentri Besar (Mohamad).

"But we will still strive to do our best,” Dr Wan Azizah said, adding that Dr S. Streram will provide the best services.

“Our candidate was previously barred from entering the nomination centre (during GE14). The winning was not right. We will right the wrong this time,” she added.

Dr Wan Azizah said previously, Pakatan candidates could not appear on national media like RTM.

“It was difficult for us to appear on RTM. Now we can,” she said, adding that this provides a better chance for the coalition.

Meanwhile, Dr Streram said he was not worried although there were many buntings and posters of Mohamad in Rantau area.

“I am not worried. Yes, I noticed not many faces of mine were put up here. My team will do what is necessary.

“My team and machinery are working hard. Based on their feedback, the support for Pakatan is strong,” he said to reporters.

The Rantau by-election was triggered following a Federal Court decision to uphold an earlier ruling by the Election Court to nullify the results.

In GE14, Umno deputy president Mohamad, who was a three-term Rantau assemblyman, won the state seat unopposed after Dr Streram was denied entry to submit his nomination papers as he did not have a tag or a pass.

Election Court judge Azimah Omar allowed Dr Streram's petition for a by-election on the grounds that Mohamad's election victory was not valid.

The Rantau polls is the seventh by-election post-GE14, and the third to be held in 2019 after Cameron Highlands and Semenyih.
