IPOH: Allowing Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) holders to sit for the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) examination should not be seen as the government recognising the UEC, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The MCA president said professional bodies, from time to time, would review its qualifications, and this is different from recognition.
“Many misconceive the move as the government recognising UEC.
“I have been asking over and over again when the UEC will be recognised, but just two days ago I got the same reply in Parliament that the matter was being studied by a task force,” he told reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony of the Perak Wushu, Lion and Dragon Dance Federation’s training centre in Buntong here.
On Friday, it was reported that holders of UEC would now be able to sit for the CLP examination, provided they fulfilled certain requirements.
Legal Profession Qualifying Board chairman Tommy Thomas said that in order to be eligible, UEC holders must have a pass in at least two subjects at Senior Middle 3 level, as well as a minimum of five credits at SPM, O level or its equivalent.
Dr Wee said the task force set up to study the recognition was still engaging with stakeholders.
“Thus allowing UEC holders to sit for CLP should not be seen as the government recognising the (UEC) examination,” he added.
